This version of alka-linux has been sponsored by the DIME European project, it is based on the Morphix software and was build with the technical support of Aperte
This versions of alka-linux:
- Has very low requirements in term of memory and CPU power, running also on oldest systems
- Has a simple, easy-to-use graphical interface, based on XFCE
- Allows you to store your files in Alka-linux on USB storage devices, like a USB memory stick
- Has documentation on how to add new software and customize Alka-linux, and even how to build Alka-linux using a Linux environment
A short list of the pre-installed software includes:
General software
- Development tools: compilers and the GNU software toolchain
- Internet tools: The Firefox webbrowser, the Thunderbird email client and various network tools
- Typesetting, Wordprocessing and Printing: OpenOffice, LaTeX/TeTeX, various editors, CUPS
- Visualization: Gnuplot, Xfig, GIMP, ghostview, PDF viewers and Grace
- Unix command-line tools
Scientific software
- Statistics: Gretl, Tisean, Subbotools, R and a long list of R packages
- Mathematics: Octave, various software libraries
- Data-files manipulation: gbutils, netCDF
- Simulation environment: LSD
